 ART IN OTTAWA
Ottawa is the country's capital, located in south eastern Ontario, along the banks of the Ottawa River. Home to Canada's federal government buildings, the city features many "Romantic" and "Picturesque" architectural styles, such as the gothic revival Parliament Buildings and Peace Tower. The latter was built in 1922 in remembrance of the countrymen and women who lost their lives in the first World War. The Canadian Museum of History was designed by respected Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal.

The city hosts a number of annual cultural events such as the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, the International Jazz Festival, and the Folk Music Festival. In 2010, the city received a World Festival and Event City Award for its varied abundance of celebrations. The NHL Ottawa Senators are one of the city's four professional sports teams, and play home games at the Canadian Tire Centre.

ART GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS

  • The National Gallery of Canada (the NGA) is located in Ottawa, Ontario with a view of the Parliament Buildings, and is one of the best known art galleries in the country. Established in 1880, the gallery is home to over 150,000 artworks, including 125,000 contemporary photographic images. As well as the exhibition galleries, the building houses a garden courtyard and a reconstructed 19th-century chapel.

Though much of the permanent collection focuses on Canadian art, the National Gallery also possesses many works of American and European art, including artists such as Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, Paul Cezanne, Gustav Klimt, Piet Mondrian, and Auguste Rodin. Canadian artists include Louis-Philippe Hébert, Tom Thompson, Emily Carr, and Alex Colville. Indiginous Canadian artists include Frederick Alexcee, Charlie Sivuarapik, Iyola Kingwatsiak, and David Neel.

  • Founded in the 1980s following insistence by local artists on the need for a municipal gallery, the Ottawa Art Gallery has since established an impressive collection including the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art, which consists of many 20th century pieces. The gallery is also home to ART Rental and Sales. In 1993, the gallery was named a charitable organization.

Today, the OAG hosts exhibitions of local, national, and international artists, group and solo shows, and many public activities and events. The Firestone collection is regularly on display as a rotating exhibit, and features the work of all the Group of Seven artists, as well as Emily Carr, Anne Savage, Henri Masson, J.W. Beatty, and David B. Milne.

  • Koyman Galleries, established in 1965, showcases the work of nearly 200 new and established Canadian artists. Canada's largest commercial art gallery, the Koyman's collection exceeds 5,000 pieces, and features both painting and photographic arts. Though primarily contemporary artists, the collection is not limited to modern art styles, and chooses to celebrate both new and classic genres.

ARTISTIC INSTITUTIONS

  • At Algonquin College, artistically inclined students can immerse themselves in a two-year diploma program studying game development, media and communication, illustration, photography, graphic design, animation, interior decoration, or the performing arts. The college also offers a one-year Introduction to Fine Arts certificate, which prepares students for further study and careers in the art world.

Algonquin College was established in 1967, and was named after the First Nations people who once resided in the area. The school offers five Bachelor's programs in addition to 175 college programs, apprenticeships, collaborative degrees, and co-op programs. Some of the facility's notable graduates include comedian Tom Green, sportscaster Dan O'Toole, musician Jason Blaine, and filmmaker Frank Cole.

  • The two-year Photographic Arts and Production diploma offered at the School of the Photographic Arts combines photographic theory and history with practical, artistic instruction. The intensive course encourages community interaction, and evaluates students based on performance, portfolio, and individual style.

Students learn printmaking and digital techniques, as well as lighting and studio set up. The first year is broken up into five modules that focus on different genres of photography, while the second year is arranged around the planning and execution of individual final projects. Throughout the program, students are exposed to regular interaction with established photographers and other artistic professionals.

  • The Ottawa School of Art offers a three-year fine art diploma program and a portfolio certificate program. Their two city campuses also offer workshops and classes for children and adults in 3D printing, jewelry making, etching, color drawing, portrature, watercolour, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, animation, and more.

Students enrolled in the diploma program receive training in drawing, painting and sculpture, and are encouraged to create work inspired by their own vision. Studio sessions, apprenticeships, and many chances for exhibition in the three on-site galleries and beyond. The portfolio certificate program is a one-year course intended to prepare students for entrance to post-secondary art institutions by teaching important portfolio design concepts and interview preparation, as well as intensive study of sculpture, drawing, and painting.
